While some students might be bummed that school is back in session, some student athletes are thrilled to be playing their favorite sports again.
Luckily for sports fans, there are plenty of events to look forward to this week.
“Overall, we are looking forward to the fall sports season. It’s always nice to get into the competitive part of the season and start playing other schools,” said LHHS athletic director Brady Krueger.
And athletic competition isn’t limited to the high-school level. The Thunderbolt Middle School cross country team started practice today.
The Telesis Preparatory Academy with volleyball team takes to the court Tuesday against Mohave Accelerated at 5 p.m. Thursday, the team will travel to Tohono O’Odham High School to face off at 6 p.m.
Lake Havasu High School athletic events are scheduled across the board. Golf, football, track and volleyball competition begins this week.
Also, the traditional “Golden Shovel” football game happens this week.
“Football will be competitive. They are in the very talented Desert Region and they have some new faces in key positions. Karl Thompson always does a great job of getting the kids ready to compete on Friday nights. Every week, they will get better,” Krueger said.
Krueger said Erica Washington and the cross-country team will be looking to build on last year’s success. “Last year, both boys and girls teams qualified for the state meet. We are hoping that both teams will be able to get back to the state meet.”
Kari Thompson is the LHHS volleyball coach. “She has a young but talented volleyball program. She only has two seniors that will play a huge role in helping the young girls adjust to the speed of the game at varsity level.” Krueger said.
And Mike Washington’s boys golf team is hoping to qualify for a state meet.
“Jerome Kosters and the girls golf team is relatively young with some new faces. Even with a young team coach Kosters will have the girls ready to go each match,” Krueger said.
The swim team, coached by Guilia Dickinson, is looking to continue the success it has had over the past couple years. “Last year was the first year they lost a regular season meet in a few years. The talent is back and she is looking to qualify as many swimmers as she can for the state meet,” Krueger said.
The spirit line, coached by Cheryl Wylie, will be front and center showing its support. “She is continuing to rebuild the spirit line program. Every year the numbers are up and you can see the continued improvement. She has done a remarkable job turning the program around.”
