From Motivational Monday mantras on the radio show, to “Mi Gente”! is what listeners often hear when DJ Rene Garay – known as “DJ MYN” – is spinning their favorite music on KDMM 103.1 FM everyday.

“He definitely  knows how to get the party started,” says Lindley Diskin, General Sales Manager at Arizona Hometown Radio Group/River Rat Radio.

The California native has always been around music since his father was a Disc Jockey (DJ) himself, and entertained crowds with his Latin beats. He moved to Lake Havasu City at the young age of 6, and  soon followed in his dad’s footsteps with his own music and entertainment journey.

Garay’s first gig was at an event at the Havasu Lanes bowling alley. When a fellow DJ from “Good Times DJ Group” passed away, Garay found himself filling in and eventually took over, which led to more gigs and opportunities.

Garay participated in a local DJ competition at London Bridge Resort a few years ago and beat out the rest of the contestants, which led him to DJ at  KoKomo Havasu Beach Club  during Spring Break. Since then, he’s had stints at the Nautical Resort, Martini Bay and BJ’s Cabana Bar and eventually at KDMM 103.1FM. Garay is also an assistant manager and DJ at Kokomo Havasu Beach Club.

“Instead of just being behind the DJ booth at Kokomos, I am also doing many tasks to support the team,” adds Garay.

RiverScene Magazine sat down with Garay to learn more about the busy DJ.

Q. You are always spinning people’s favorite music. What is your favorite type of music?

A. My favorite type of music is Electronic Dance and I really really enjoy Latin Beats with a mix of
Hip Hop.

Q.  When you are not at work what is something you love to do?

A.  I am a huge gamer. I love video gaming. I love playing on my PS5 (Playstation 5) with my kids. We
often play together. I love the video game Apex Legends, I am currently spending time on that game.
When I am not at work, I love to spend a lot of time at home with my kids and fiancé.

Q. What is one food that you could never give up and could not get tired of?

A. My favorite food is Pizza. I grew up with pizza on my face. I love it.

Q. What is your favorite part about your job?

A. Connecting with the community. Ever since I started on the radio show, I love hearing the feedback.
I love making their day when they hear their favorite song that they haven’t heard in a while. It
is meaningful to me to bring them that music, or if I said a funny joke on the air or a
motivational quote on our “Motivational Mondays” segment.
