Annual 24 Hour Sleepless In Havasu Charity Event Set For Friday

The Annual 24 Hour Sleepless in Havasu Event returns Friday through Saturday, at Michael Alan Furnishings store in Lake Havasu City.

The event is in its 16th year, and is in partnership with the nonprofit Cancer Care Resource, which helps raise funds for free mammograms in the community.

One of the ways the event is turned into fun is by collecting sponsors and participants who sign up and get a team assembled to decorate a bed in the showroom based on the year’s assigned theme. At the same time, participants collect donations from the public that later votes for its favorite bed during the kick-off event. Participants stay up all night and partake in pre-planned activities.

“This year’s theme is “Out Of This World”, and we are excited. It is going to be stellar, both in spirit and in all the fun we have planned,” said Michael Alan Furniture director of merchandise Cailey Patton.

According to Patton, she always wanted to come up with a way to make breast cancer screenings more accessible and hassle free for women with the hope that more would feel encouraged to go get checked out.

“A year ago, I started looking into options and that’s when we came across the idea for this year, to have the mobile “MOM” mammogram truck parked here to offer free mammograms on-site on the first Friday of October at our store,” Patton said.

Patton also said there are plans to have the mobile truck available every first Friday of the month after that, to help reach more women.

For those interested in attending the the kick-off party, it takes place Friday, at Michael Alan Furnishings Store located at 2010 Acoma W. Blvd.

“Everyone is invited to come in and vote on our beds during the kick off , at 5 p.m., and also bid on silent auction items,” Patton said. We will have cake and champagne and the energy will be electric and so much fun.”

To date, Michael Alan Furnishings has raised more than $535,000 for cancer prevention screenings with all funds remaining local.
