ASU At Lake Havasu Spotlights World Representation

Although viewing Lake Havasu City as a window on the world would not immediately come to mind, Arizona State University at Lake Havasu City issued passports and conducted a world tour in a March 13-14 tourist adventure.

“Bridge to the World” is the title of an exhibit at the ASU Havasu Learning Research Center. It is an exhibit that showcases ASU Sun Devils from around the world.

Rebecca Lidstrom, a professor of kinesiology and the Community Engagement Specialists at ASU Havasu said the event was meant to bring community members to the campus.

“We have just over 200 students here and within that 200 students we have 27 different countries represented by the students,” Lidstrom said.

“We thought Havasu not to experience that would be a shame, so we wanted all our students to be able share where they come from, their culture their heritage different traditions,” she said.

“Bridge to the World” featured 14 counties and those visiting the exhibit can visit the students, speak to them and have a “passport” stamped with each visit.

Indigenous music could be heard at each exhibit that also featured photos and quick facts about each country that included architecture, artifacts from each region as well as the two main staple dishes from each country.

Photos of each of the 27 countries were curated and displayed at the exhibit.

“It’s a great way to share where our students come from,” Lidstrom said.

Countries included on the tour – in addition to the United States – included Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, Greece, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, India, Vietnam, Japan, Australia and Mexico.

Lake Havasu City Mayor Cal Sheehy opened the exhibit that was catered by Shugrue’s Restaurant and Brewery Group.
