Buses By The Bridge Brings VW Enthusiasts Together
By Becky Maxedon
It’s all about the people, the camaraderie and being outside. That’s the overall consensus of the Fahrvergnṻgen people at this weekend’s Buses by the Bridge in Lake Havasu City.
Fahrvergnṻgen is the German word meaning driving pleasure and that’s what VW bus owners exemplify.
This is the 28th annual Buses by the Bridge that showcases VW buses that come from across the country to camp out at Lake Havasu State Park and the event continues through Sunday.
Lilia and Ben Narbaez are a couple of the bus enthusiasts participating this weekend.
“I purchased this bus in 2001 from a student in Tempe. I’m from Phoenix, and I’ve been coming every year since then and having a great time,” Lilia Narbaez said.
She said she has made some changes – a better engine, a new paint job – to name a few.
“My favorite part is definitely meeting new people and the camaraderie. We make some great drinks here at the little bar,” she said.
One of Narbaez’s journeys involved shipping her bus to Spokane, Wash.
“We drove it home on the coast, so we hit a lot of spots on the beach and had a really great time coming back,” she said.
For Ben Narbaez it’s the memories. “It’s the entire thing,” he said.
Jeralyn Aston, from Surprise, is at Buses by the Bridge with her VW bus “Corn Dog.”
“Feb. 10, it will be three years since I found her in a little town in Oregon called Riddle,” she said.
“I drove out there and then drove her back – 15 degree weather. It froze up inside. It was fun though.”
Aston said she mainly travels to shows and events around the Arizona area.
“I love meeting the people and being outside. This is my first time at Buses by the Bridge,” she said.
She travels with her companion Joey. Joey is a stuffed monkey.
“Joey keeps the bus running. He keeps her in perfect running shape. When I met Joey, he was just a bust, so I built him a body and he’s just been going everywhere with me.”
Buses by the Bridge continues through the weekend with live entertainment, kids activities and more. There are vendors on hand with car part as well as the Lake Havasu High School Boosters Club selling burgers and other food.
Friday night at 6, there is a West Coast Bays Lantern Walk at the Showmobile.
