As cities go, Lake Havasu City is a youngster.
Its early building and development happened pretty quickly after Robert P. McCulloch Sr. began testing his outboard motors on the lake. He envisioned a city and set about making it happen. From 1958 to 1963, the transformation of the area was impressive.
Havasu resident Jay Coombs has been sharing historic maps, documents, videos, photos from 1962-1981 and more with RiverScene Magazine.
Coombs’ father – Joe Coombs – was the president of Tri-County Engineering Corp., and was tasked with the engineering and development of the city. And his records and treasure trove of information will be part of a series chronicling the beginnings of Lake Havasu City.
In this video, Coombs talks with RiverScene’s Lonnie Stevensen about the earliest development plans for the city. Maps, ariel photographs and more help paint the picture of early life in the area.
