Since the 1980’s in Lake Havasu City, the Knights of Columbus Bingo Hall has drawn in eager players from the community from all walks of life and all ages 18+.

“It’s almost like a fundraiser for the community,” says Knights of Columbus Bingo Manager of over four years, Denise Robbins.

“Obviously people win money and prizes each time they play, but all the profits that we make we donate back into the community. Last year, we donated approximately $60,000 to about 12 different entities in our community. And that’s all because of our wonderful players. The more players we have the more we are able to give out.”

There are two sessions a week: Monday, the doors open at 4 p.m. with play beginning at 6 until 9:30 p.m and Wednesday, doors open at 11 a.m. with play beginning at 1 until 4:30 p.m. Players must bring cash or check to play. For regular bingo sessions, prize amounts are determined by the number of players for that session. There are also various different bingo cards available, such as the Betty Boop or Pot of Gold cards that pay out more depending on how many are purchased.

Aside from the draw of winning prizes and cash, bingo night attracts players and volunteers for more wholesome reasons.

“I just like getting to know people,” says volunteer Kevin Mount. “I like volunteering and helping out. I’m retired and I needed something to do.”

Bill Meehan was also volunteering in charge of the snack bar on Monday night’s bingo session said, “The people are just so lovable. Everybody’s happy. You see a lot of smiling faces there all the time.”

Jean Fetterman has been coming to bingo at Knights of Columbus for 26 years. She said she loves, “Socializing with all my friends.” As a long time bingo player, Fetterman is well prepared with supplies such as tape, dabbers of different colors, Kleenex or paper towels and snacks. She is a fan of the Betty Boop bingo card in particular and carries with her a painted rock of the cartoon figure Betty Boop for the occasion.

“I love helping and serving our community and our bingo players,” bingo manager Robbins said. “My bingo players are not just people who come in and play bingo, they’re my bingo family you might as well say.”

Monday night there were multiple winners, including an individual who won more than $500. The Knights of Columbus Bingo Hall at 186 London Bridge Road in Lake Havasu also has a Facebook page for those interested, https://www.facebook.com/ColumbianBINGO
