Students got to spend time with their grandparents at the annual Grandparents Day event hosted by school staff and parent volunteers at Starline Elementary Thursday morning.
“Our PTA (Parent Teacher Association) has made this a tradition at Starline and it is a great opportunity to invite their grandparents or a meaningful adult in their life to come,” said Starline Elementary Principal, Ginny Sautner.
Families had the opportunity to play board games, draw or color on worksheets together and listen to the piano played by music teacher Darren Huntting. Grandparents were also treated to some fresh blooms donated by Smiths Grocery.

“We made sure we also had lots of goodies like cookies, baked goods and muffins to offer. We also tried to get every grandma a fresh flower to take home,” said Starline Parent-Teacher Association Vice President, Lisa Nelson.

Lake Havasu Resident and grandparent Kim Semmens said she enjoyed the event and is also nostalgic since she also attended the same elementary school growing up.
“I’m excited about it. I came to this very school about 30 years ago. I am here for my grandson who is in kindergarten here now,” said Semmens.

For students who didn’t have grandparents available to come, there were other residents ready to step in.
“We partnered with Prestige Assisted Living who brought their residents, so we also had other adults for the students to play games with and still have a lot of intergenerational speaking and collaborating happening,” said Sautner. “It’s also a great way to connect with the community.”
