There’s a new, exciting athletic opportunity for 10-and-up and 12-and-up girls in Lake Havasu City.

Fury Girls Softball Club hosted a “Friendly” tournament over the last weekend that featured teams from Lake Havasu City, Blythe, Calif., Kingman and Mohave Valley.

Fury head coach Travis Tweten said they were more scrimmages meant to get teams together for friendly competition.

“It’s a way to get together and not spend a lot of money on a tournament and just kind of see each other play a lot and we get a lot of games in,” Tweten said.

“We play tournaments with all these teams in other cities, and we’ll have one in Lake Havasu soon as well.”

Tweten explained the tournament last weekend was for 10-and-up age levels.

“We will have a 12-and-up as soon as the year starts to wrap up. Next spring, we’ll be doing rec ball,” he said.

Tweten is from California but moved to Lake Havasu City about a year ago.

“I have two daughters on the team. We were looking for something that wasn’t just in the spring, so we joined Havasu Girls Softball and got to meet a lot of these girls in the rec league, and we just decided we wanted to keep going. We have girls from all over the city – like five different elementary schools,” Tweten said.

“It’s like a family here, we all get together. We travel. We went to Tucson, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Bullhead. They’re just having a great time. For a lot of them, it was their first time playing softball and we’ll just build them up from that.”

RiverScene Magazine asked a few members of the Fury team what they liked about playing softball.

Team member Emery Tweten said she likes it “because it teaches you some lessons and also because it’s just a fun sport to get down and dirty.”

Addison Housman said, “You get to bond with your team, and you get to go all over with travel ball and just have a good experience.”

“You get to play with friends you get to learn different positions that you never played before. You get to keep getting better and better and you get to work out. I play outfield but I’m working to play second base,” Kensley Sandoval said.

Madelyn Sanchez, who plays third base and outfield said, “I like it because it’s an active sport and you get to bond with your friends. Even if you’re new, you can still make friends with everyone.”

“It’s a very active sport. I’ve always liked playing softball and I’m trying to get better,” Emalynn Garcia said. Garcia said she has been playing for two years.

The Fury Girls Softball Club is currently accepting new players for the next season. Girls with birth years 2012-1015 can sign up and start training with the club immediately.

Assistant coaches for the Fury are: Persie Tweten, Jeremy Hart, Jordan Sandoval, Mark Sanchez, and Brandon Blum.
