It happened Saturday on Lake Havasu.
Junior-high and high-school kids put down their electronic devices, picked up fishing poles and boarded boats to take part in a youth bass tournament launched at the Lake Havasu Marina.
Havasu Bass Club is comprised of a group of young anglers dedicated to the sport of bass fishing.
An email from the club noted, “Not only do they love to hold their monthly tournaments for a little competition, but they are passionate about educating the youth on the sport.”
This weekend was the second Havasu Bass Club Youth Tournament. The tournament was open to junior-high and high-school students.
There were 28 youth anglers who were split into 14 boats. Each boat consisted of a three-person team – one boat captain and two student anglers. The teams were decided using a random draw to make the field more competitive. The boat captains were members of the Havasu Bass Club.
All three people on the boat fish, and each person weighed in one fish for a combined three-fish total. Each angler was allowed to cull their own fish throughout the day to bring the biggest ones to the scale.
Prizes were awarded as follows:
Smallest 3 fish limit: $100
Boater Big Fish: $250 Gift Certificate
Youth Angler Big Fish: $250 Gift Certificate
1st Place: Rods and Gift Packs
2nd Place: Rods and Gift Packs
3rd Place: Rods and Gift Packs

Boater Big Fish: Mark Wilkinson with a 3.60 lb. big fish
Student Big Fish: Connor Dalton with a 4.22 lb. big fish
1st Place-Boat #9-Boater: Zach Hayes, Student Anglers: Brenner Dodson and Connor Dalton
2nd Place-Boat #2- Boater: Craig McCoy, Student Anglers: Aaron Stopke and Mason Hayes
3rd Place- Boat #6-Boater: Aaron Mansfield, Student Anglers: Luke Mansfield and Steven Brady
