The Lake Havasu Mountain Bike Club is more than just a cycling group — it’s a movement built on the pillars of fun, character development and healthy living.
Founded by local cycling enthusiasts in 2014, the club began with a small group made up of eight members that has grown into a bigger community of more than 50 riders, ranging in age from 4 to 80.
The club originally launched under Lake Havasu Bike and Fitted Club, the club now rides year-round, with a five-month race season that runs from January through May.

While racing is encouraged, it’s far from mandatory — the club’s core focus remains on practicing skills, training and having a great time.
“Our top priority is kids but everyone is welcome,” says Coach Lu Lastra, the heart of the club.
“There are no membership fees, just bring your own equipment, and we’ll help guide you if you need advice on what to get or where to find it,” Lastra said.
The club even welcomes Class 1 e-bikes, making cycling accessible for a wider range of riders.”
“My daughter Stevie has been in the club since she was 7 and is now 13. As a parent, for me, the club teaches discipline, work ethic and the comradery is a benefit,” said Scott Welte. “It is such a confidence-builder for everybody whether a kid or if you are an adult.”

Coach Lu, a retired Navy SEAL Master Chief with 35 years of service, brings a wealth of leadership experience to the team. He currently holds the title of Naval Special Warfare Director of Mentorship Emeritus, but his mission has shifted from mentoring elite warriors to guiding the next generation of local youth and fostering a supportive, active community.
“We’re here to build strong character and lifelong habits through cycling,” Lastra said. “The battlefield has changed, however we’re still training leaders.”
