Balloonists Share Air Stories With High School Students

Thursday morning, students at Lake Havasu High School gathered on the lower ball field to view two pilots as they prepared their hot air balloons for take off.

Students got the chance to meet and engage with Michael Glen, the first paraplegic to operate hot air balloons, as well as his father, Bill Glen.

“The coolest part is we all turn into little kids around the balloons no matter your age,” said Glen, pilot of ‘Elevation ll.’

Questions rapidly flew from the mouths of curious students trying to get as much information on the intriguing balloons and what it’s like to be high in the air. One common response given by pilots and crew members was the beautiful scenery Lake Havasu showcases. “It’s so beautiful, the pilots love flying here,” said flights ops manager Cheryl Maclean.

The balloonists agreed the looks of awe shown by locals continue to bring a smile to the faces of everyone working to make the balloon festival possible.

With the ninth annual balloon festival kicking off Thursday, local civilians dispersed to various locations set up for balloon rides and observation.The event carries on through the weekend and concludes Sunday.

All events begin at 6 a.m., with closing times differing, depending on weather conditions. While attending be sure to support the balloon fest by participating in the 5k run at 8 a.m., Saturday, as well as going down to Windsor 4 for balloon rides and live music performances.
