Calvary Baptist Church sponsored its first Lake Havasu City “Serve our Schools” event Saturday morning and several area church congregations and service clubs and organizations showed up to make a difference in local public and charter schools throughout the city.

Calvary planned 10 work projects at each public school in the Lake Havasu Unified School District and both charter schools.

The goal of Serve our Schools was to have 100 volunteers working on projects at each school, with 1,000 volunteers from the Lake Havasu community serving the schools all at one time on one day.

Robert Smith, with Calvary Baptist Church was working Saturday at Smoketree Elementary.

“Today we have our inaugural Serve Our Schools event. We’ve got about 10 work projects at all of our public and charter schools in Lake Havasu,” Smith said.

“We’ve got a bunch of groups from Calvary working as well as community groups, school charter clubs, other churches and all kinds of different community groups coming out to help us with this event. We’re here at Smoketree today where we’re doing a lot of outside painting, rejuvenating fences repainting parking lots and curbs and a lot of other projects,” he said.

Mt. Olive Lutheran was among some of the other churches participating Saturday.

Pastor Craig Corbin, of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church was also at Smoketree Elementary School.

“We are part of a multiple church event. This is an event that came about July 26, when about eight or 10 churches met at Calvary Baptist to discuss making an impact in the Lake Havasu Community and saying to the community that our churches care,” Corbin said.

He said the churches wanted to come together as an ecumenical ministry to make a statement to the community that said, “Look, our churches are really making a difference here in the community.”

Corbin said, “We have taken this on wholeheartedly and we’re here to support Smoketree and all the other schools. This is something our church really wanted to be a part of because we really felt it was important to us to come together ecumenically to really make a difference.”

In addition to Calvary Baptist and Mt. Olive Lutheran, New Hope Calvary, Covenant Church, Abundant Grace Church and the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints also volunteered at local schools.

Key Club, NHS, Student Council, BPOE Elks Club, FFLCA and Interact Club worked alongside parishioners to complete work projects at the schools.

Several community businesses and other organizations donated food and supplies to make the day a successful fixer-upper day for Lake Havasu City.
