Havasu Falls At Lee Williams 17-6

Friday night, Lake Havasu High School Knights were again on the road, this time at Lee Williams High School to face the Volunteers. This was the last of three games on the road to open the season and Havasu started the game looking like a team that’s been on the road three weeks in a row.

Head coach Tanner Kelly addressed the slow start after the game. “The first play of the game, I had to call a timeout because we had messed up the snap,” Kelly said. “We started out in the wildcat and for whatever reason, the center was having a hard time with the cadence and things just kind of mushroomed from there.”

Havasu would give up two first-quarter touchdowns to Lee Williams, while the Havasu offense tried to find a rhythm. But penalties and mental mistakes would haunt the Knights offense, giving up a safety in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, the defense would bend but not break holding the potent Lee Williams off the scoreboard including a huge goal line stand at the end of the second quarter, which saw Lee Williams take a 15-0 lead into halftime.

Havasu’s defense came out in the third quarter with solid opening series stand against the Volunteers.

“Coach Novy did a good job getting making adjustments in the second half,” Coach Kelly said. “He got the guys making plays and holding them out of the end zone.”

Lake Havasu would get on the board with a 5-yard touchdown run by senior Keilor Pizarro, making the score 15-6.

The third quarter was briefly delayed due to the field’s sprinkler system coming on. Lee Williams personnel were able to get the sprinklers turned off after about 10 minutes and action would resume.

However, Lee Williams would then block a Havasu punt deep in their own territory which would result in a second safety and a 17-6 lead.

Havasu had chances but penalties kept the Knights from getting any closer.

“We had chances,” Kelly said. “Just too many penalties, too many mental mistakes, missing guys that are open, missing a block, you just can’t win football games against good teams with those errors.”

“But our guys fought, I’m proud of the effort,” Kelly added. “We’ll go back to the drawing board and fix those things for next week against Alhambra.”

The Knights, 1-2 on the season, finally get to play at home Sept. 18, when they host the Lions from Alhambra who come into the game 0-3 and looking for their first win of the season.
