Mohave College Hosts ‘College For Kids’ Summer Program

The “College for Kids” program has returned to the Lake Havasu City Mohave College campus, providing academic and hands-on enrichment.

The program gives children an opportunity to explore real-life careers by using engaging activities.

Sandy Desmarteau, who has been in charge of this program for four years, said the goal of “College for Kids” is to “Bring awareness to the community that we offer courses for younger students and to get the kids on campus so they get used to being here.”

Mohave College offers a myriad of classes to choose from, with STEM & Medical Exploration, Technology & Innovation, Creative Expression, Leadership & Life Skills, and Cultural Awareness & Compassion all being areas of discovery.

Desmarteau said, “I like this idea because I have grandchildren of my own and my grandchildren have done these camps and my youngest daughter did these camps years ago. And it brought her awareness and got her acclimated to coming on a college campus.”

There are classes geared toward students who prefer creativity, but also classes for the STEM-interested students.

Some of the classes and activities are Mini-Medics, Art Adventure, Lego LIfe Lessons, Coding Camp, Safe & Smart Sitter, Conversational Spanish, and Paw & Pets.

While the summer “College for Kids” program is only available in the summer, Mohave College also has youth programs from the fall through the spring.

They host youth ceramics, youth art classes, and ballet to name a few.

Desmarteau said she looks forward to the future of their youth programs. “This fall, we’re starting a youth lapidary class, which will teach kids how to recognize the different rocks, how to polish them, how to cut them, and what you can do with a polished cut rock when you’re finished.”

Mohave College uses the “College for Kids” program to keep Lake Havasu City’s youth involved and learning during the summer.
