Ever wonder what it is like inside the London Bridge?

Is it hollow or filled with concrete?

Are bats and other creatures living inside the Bridge?

Is it haunted?

The Bridge is hollow. There is a series of passageways and chambers that follow from one end of the Bridge to the other and some of these passageways and chambers are in need of maintenance to ensure city workers’ safety.

There are bats and other small living creatures inside of the Bridge. Bats have been known to live inside of the bridge and the RiverScene team had a few fly past their heads during their tour.

“The bats fly past our ears all the time, they are more scared of us than we are them,” said Rich Wells.

Workers began work in January,2015 to give a minor facelift to the inside of the London Bridge in Lake Havasu City.

One of the badly needed repairs was installation of a second access door into the Bridge. Up until 2015, only one door leading in and out of the Bridge is located on the Island side near Javalina Cantina.

The London Bridge is hollow on the inside, and gas and water lines from the mainland to the Island travel through that space. This second door will provide easier access on the mainland side of the Bridge for city workers.

Above the water’s surface, the Bridge sits on bearings. This allows the bridge to “float” and move in case of any shift in ground movement. These bearings were cleaned and dirt was cleared away.

Handrails were installed along slopes inside the bridge, ladders were installed for easier access into lower chambers and retaining walls were built to help keep dirt from falling into the bearings. An abutment slope on the outside of the London Bridge is also being secured and stabilized.

*Editor’s Note: The maintenance work on the London Bridge finished in May,2015.

As for the last question? There are some spooky haunting stories that have been told by residents and others. Tell RSM if you think those stories are true or let us know if you have ever seen any apparitions on or around the London Bridge.
