Sandra Tucker

I went to school in Havasu from preschool until 11th grade. I attended Havasupai, Daytona and Lake Havasu High School. When I moved to Denver in 2010, I wanted to start a sibling support group. Since my dad died in 2001, I felt like it was always my mom, David and myself. David has Autism, and after my dad passed away, he struggled to re-adjust. He is extremely smart; he just has some social issues once in a while. Since high school, though, his social skills are much better than my own. I felt like I had left that close circle when I moved and needed to do something to relieve the guilt. That’s when Sibling Tree started.

I started attending a sibling support group for the siblings of individuals with special needs. In 2012, Firefly Autism (a school for children with autism), found out about our program and decided to sponsor us and let other organizations know who we were. In the last year and a half, we have expanded greatly and have groups sponsored by the Autism Society of Boulder County and the Autism Society of Colorado. We have also become the Colorado chapter for the Sibling Leadership Network.

Last year, I was nominated for the Women of Worth award. I was one of the 30 finalists and won the daily point of light award, as well as a presidential award for all the work I have done. I am also working on publishing a workbook for the siblings of children with autism. This workbook would be a way for siblings to get their feelings out, learn how to talk to their parents, as well as teach them how to empower themselves.

I grew up in Havasu and graduated from LHHS in 1996. I currently live in Gilbert,AZ where I own and operate The Schimmel Shop. The Schimmel Shop is a fine pen and custom woodwork shop that specializes in unique and high end pens and unusual hand made wood works.

I am best known for my steampunk pens and jewelry. I love taking old hand worked materials that are no longer working or in use, and creating them into something new. I love blending modern technology with tools and methods from the past.
