Mohave High School Thunderbirds Retain Golden Shovel
The Mohave High School Thunderbirds took on the Lake Havasu High School Knights varsity football squad Friday night in the annual battle for the Golden Shovel.
The Thunderbirds were victorious with a score of 27-21 over the Knights, retaining the Golden Shovel for the third year in a row.
The Knights scored in the first quarter with a 4-yard touchdown run by Luke Johnson.
But the Thunderbirds answered with a passing touchdown to Pedro Marentes from Joe Yoney.
The quarter ended in a 7-7 tie.
Mohave went on to score two touchdowns in the second quarter on a 12-yard run by Joe Yoney and a 9-yard pass from Joe Yoney to Anthony Moses.
The Knights scored on a 2-yard pass to Kyle Crowe from Luke Johnson, ending the quarter Mohave 21-14.
Havasu scored in the third quarter with a 10-yard pass from Halo Jump to Carter Devett.
But the Thunderbirds scored another touchdown with a 25-yard pass from Joe Yoney to Trison Urias.
The third ended with a score of 27-19.
Havasu’s Owen Merrill tackled Thunderbird quarterback Yoney in the end zone in the fourth quarter for a safety, but it wasn’t enough for the Knights.
The game ended with a Thunderbird victory of 27-21 over Havasu.
Havasu starting quarterback Tripp Burke was injured midway through the second quarter and did not return.
