Go Skateboarding Day Observed In Lake Havasu

June 21 is National Skateboarding Day and to kick off the national holiday, Lake Havasu City Mayor Cal Sheehy presented a proclamation for Go Skate Boarding Day in Lake Havasu City along with the community at Tinnell Memorial Skate Park Wednesday.

“This is the 10th anniversary of this skateboarding park,” said Lake Havasu resident and organizer Eddie Katz. “Well, the second park we’ll call it. It was built in 2013 and this is 2023, which means at some point this year this is the 10th anniversary.”

Katz says the hope is to cultivate a renewed interest in skateboarding and make it strong again after the sport dropped off in recent years.

” This is the grassroots effort of doing that, and everything will be for free, we will offer more skate jams in the future with full community involvement,” said Katz.

The Tinnell Memorial Skate Park has unobstructed lake views as a backdrop, and is the largest sports skating complex in Arizona. It was named and dedicated for Patrick Tinnell, a fallen soldier from Lake Havasu City, and in memory of Colin Sasseen.

“There is already a BMX and scooter community here,” Katz said. “It is already strong because this is basically a BMX and scooter park. We the taxpayers paid for it. And so we the taxpayers are going to use this park. We are going to bring skateboarding back.”

The Tinnell Memorial Skate Park is located inside Rotary Community Park on 1400 Smoketree Ave., Lake Havasu City, AZ.
