Stevie Welte, of Lake Havasu City, is the USA BMX Arizona State Champion in 5 & Under Expert/Girl class.
Stevie Welte, a 5-year-old, is in kindergarten at Starline Elementary School and over the Oct. 28-29 weekend, she attended the Arizona State Championships at Black Mountain BMX located in North Phoenix.
This was a two-day event with Saturday being double-point race for the District that Welte races in, with the State Finals Sunday. The race attracts racers from all over the state and ends a 10-month, seven-race series hosted by USA BMX-sanctioned tracks in the state.
Welte moved up the Expert/Girl class last week and this race was the first time she competed with the faster girls.
On Saturday, Welte was paired with 6-year-old girls and she held her own, finishing out the day with a third-place spot on the podium. Sunday, Welte raced a World number 1 racer, and a National top-5 girl. Welte put in her best performances of the weekend but fell short of making the 6-year-old Girl main event. At the end, she was rewarded with the number 1 State number plate and Championship backpack for 5 and Under Expert/Girl.
She will start running her new number this week at Sara Park BMX. Also, Welte is looking at a possible top 10 in this District. This includes all girls, all ages and that will be finalized at the season’s end Dec. 15.
Welte’s sponsors are Team Cycle Therapy, Palmieri Construction, Plumbing Services, Bullet Proof Motorsports, At Your Service Window Cleaning, Jet Trim, Fly Racing, FahQ Racing and Off Road Vixens.
Also today Stevie received an invite to participate in the Race of Champions which is by invite only. This event is in conjunction with the USA BMX Grands which BMX racings equivalent to the Daytona 500. It is traditionally held over Thanksgiving weekend and is attended by thousands. We are working on logistics and funding. We might have to knock on some doors!
The event is held in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
No iPads were injured during the course of Stevie’s rigorous training–good old outside activity, fresh air and pedaling with Dad!
This is awesome Stevie! I’m so very proud of you!
