When Lorinda Moore arrived in Lake Havasu City about three years ago, she wanted to find a way to meet people and make friends. That’s when she started the Facebook page Lake Havasu Social.

On the page, Moore invited folks to join her for a social time to break bread and get to know one another.

“I thought there must be some way for people who were either retired or they didn’t meet new friend or didn’t make friends at work to be able to meet in a safe environment that wasn’t a dating place, but just a place for people to get together and get to know each other, Moore said.

She said she didn’t want people sitting at home alone being depressed or sad.

“The first time I asked people to come out there were six people. The next time there was 12 and now we average between 20 and 40 people,” Moore said.

The group meets every Thursday night. This Thursday, the group was at Golden Corral and Moore said they try to support local businesses but they also need a space that can accommodate the group as it expands.

The group is open to all ages and some of the offshoot activities like boating and other water-related recreation as well as pool parties, barbeques and bonfires.

Dawn Mcelwain is a member of the group who started coming about the time it was formed.

“I have a friend who told me I should meet Lorinda and thought we would hit it off. I was newly divorced and was looking to meet people – not looking for a hookup or looking for a date but I wanted to be around people so I came,” Mcelwain said.

She said her friend was right and she and Moore have become close friends.

“The main thing is this enables people to get out of the house. There’s no pressure. You get to know people in your area and you get to know your community. There’s always someone new to meet and when the snowbirds come back, it’s like old home week,” Mcelwain said.
