Golf is a popular sport in Lake Havasu City — so popular that multiple courses in this small town are kept busy year around.

Many service organizations host golf tournaments to raise funds for its individual goals. One such organization is the Lake Havasu Military Moms. Their annual golf tournament is Sunday, at the Courses at London Bridge.

Military Moms is a 501(c)3 nonprofit whose mission is to support active duty military and local veterans in need.

“This year is our seventh annual tournament,” Military Moms president Cindy Ritter said. “It’s our only fundraiser of the year, and the proceeds allow us to send care packages to local active duty troops four times a year. It’s important to our troops that they know their hometown remembers and cares about them. We ship between 40 and 120 boxes in each shipment, and the troops really appreciate getting things like toiletries, magazines, snacks, toothbrushes and socks.”

The Military Moms also use tournament funds to help local veterans in need.

“We help an average of one or two local veterans almost every month,” Ritter explained. Most of the requests for help come through the Veterans Resource Team, the support group that helps the Havasu Veterans Treatment Court locate resources for justice-involved veterans.

“We pay many electric bills for veterans who have fallen on hard times,” Ritter added. “We also help with rent, food, gas and many other things. We’ve donated funds to repair wheelchairs and roofs, and to send the mother of a wounded warrior to the hospital to be with her son. As long as we have the funds available, we help our veterans and their families as much as we can.”

This year, Military Moms are excited to have a very special addition to the tournament. Local country singer Matt Farris will entertain golfers during lunch from noon to 1 p.m. on the patio of the Courses at London Bridge.

Ritter said they still have openings for more golfers for this Sunday. Players can call her at 626-327-1077 for an entry form. Their fees are among the lowest in Havasu: $35 for active duty military, $50 for veterans, $55 for non-veterans. The fee includes golf cart and lunch.

“The more golfers we have,” Ritter said, “the more active duty and veterans we can help.”
