Lake Havasu Athletes Participate In Special Olympics Torch Run

Special Olympics athletes had a fun day Saturday as they participated in a torch run at London Bridge Beach.

The athletes joined with the Lake Havasu City Police Department as the torch was carried around the Island and then on to London Bridge Beach.

The Special Olympics Counsel consists of: Teri Halbash, Dr. Rebecca Stone, Loren Jackson, Andrea Foote, Kyler Cox, Cindy Keasey, Brenda Johnson, Lisa Ball, David Thompson, and Rhonda Standsberry.

Special Olympics was founded in 1968 in Chicago, Ill., although the dream began with Eunice Kennedy Shriver at a camp she started in her  backyard in the early ’60s. The organization encourages people with and without intellectual disabilities on every continent to become involved.

In the years since, it has grown into a worldwide movement.

The first torch run with law enforcement was in the ealry 1980s in Kansas.
